Weather

Weather Considerations

  It's cooler at higher elevations
Escape the summer heat by hiking with us in the mountains! It is a refreshing about 10° cooler where we hike in the hottest times of summer than it is in town! So, be prepared with another layer on our hikes!

For snowshoeing, please be prepared for cold weather and snow even if the weather report says it will be warm and sunny, as it is usually about 10° cooler at the elevations we snowshoe than in town.

Please note that when in doubt about what kinds of clothes to bring for what kind of weather, bring it all! Once you get to the meeting place, we can talk about what clothes to bring and what to leave behind.

Cancellation Policies

  Snowshoe trips
In case of a severe snow storm on the day of or night before a trip, that trip location may be changed because road crews may not have had sufficient time to clear the highways to the snow parks, nor would the crews have time to clear the parking lots at the snow parks. If a snowshoe trip location is changed, the level of the trip will remain the same. Note: often it is snowing in the mountains when it's raining in town, so assume the trip is on unless the guide calls to cancel.

The guide will contact, by phone, each snowshoer in the early morning if a trip location is changed.

In the case of a severe snowstorm that occurs while a snowshoe trip is in progress, we will simply turn around earlier than anticipated and return to the parking lot.

  Hiking trips
It is very rare that a hiking trip will be canceled. Hikes are not canceled due to rain. It is sometimes necessary to change the location of a hiking trip due to:
  • Controlled burns in the area
  • Road construction or road closures
  • Lots of downed trees across the trail due to a severe wind storm the day or night before
  • Snow on the highway or trail (particularly true in April and October)
The guide will contact, by phone, each hiker signed up for a particular trip the night before or in the early morning if the location of the hike and possibly the meeting place is to be changed.
